Spring Survival Post 84

I spend this past weekend camping in the woods at a spring survival post 84 trip.

Post 84 is a student lead no-profit organization focused on giving teens outdoor education. They run a variety of different trips, from snow camping, into to rock climbing.

If you have read any of my previous blog posts, you’d know I’m all about putting yourself in new situations and getting out of your comfort zone as much as possible. In February I went to post 84’s Sibara trip which was a day of snowshoeing, and a night of snow camping. Previous to that I’d never even been camping before.

I was debating going on this spring survival, it is a three day time commitment, and I didn’t know what I would be doing in the woods for the whole weekend. I didn’t fully know what to expect or have any expectations, which I think always bring the best experiences. All I knew was that I would learn something new and unplug for being on my phone.

During their survival trips, you learn about navigation, woodchopping, create shelter, basically how to survive in the woods type stuff. The goal of the trip is to be able to “survive” a night alone in the wilderness. I was impressed with myself for being about to build my own shelter for the night alone. I used garbage bags, sticks, and ferns. I slept the whole night thru without getting wet from the rain, which wasn’t the case for all campers. It was nice to get out of the box and learn about all the natural resources and connect with people I wouln’t have the chance to otherwise.
